Domain Transfer
What is a Domain Transfer?
A domain transfer is the process of moving a domain name from one owner to another or from one registrar to another. It ensures that the new owner has full legal rights to the domain, along with the ability to manage its settings and renewals. Transfers are vital for securing ownership after a purchase, aligning domain management with business goals, or consolidating domains under a preferred registrar.
Domain transfer types
Domains Under 60 Days (Internal Transfer)
Domains less than 60 days old cannot be transferred externally due to ICANN regulations but can be moved within the same registrar. This is called an internal push. The process involves the seller initiating the transfer by entering the buyer's account details into the registrar's system. The domain ownership is updated instantly without downtime.
Domains Over 60 Days
The domain can now be transferred to a different registrar. This requires:
Unlocking the domain for transfer by the seller.
Obtaining an authorization code (EPP code) from the seller.
Initiating the transfer at the new registrar and entering the authorization code.
Confirming the transfer request via email.
The process may take 5-7 days, depending on the registrar, but your domain remains operational during the transition.
